Colombia Claims Ecuador Meddles in Election After Tariff Pledge

(MENAFN) Colombia’s foreign ministry has accused Ecuador’s president of “deliberate interference” in its upcoming presidential election after he promised to lift tariffs during a conversation with a right-wing candidate, according to reports.

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa described his discussion with Colombian presidential hopeful Abelardo de la Espriella on Friday as engagement with a potential future administration, saying the two had “reached an agreement” on issues related to trade and security.

Colombia is set to hold its presidential election on Sunday in a highly polarised political climate, with voters preparing to choose a successor to left-wing President Gustavo Petro, who is constitutionally barred from running again.

The election outcome is expected to influence Colombia’s foreign alignments and its strategy for addressing powerful drug trafficking networks amid escalating violence across the country.

President Petro has frequently clashed with US President Donald Trump on matters including drug policy and regional intervention. Meanwhile, Noboa, regarded as a close ally of the US leader, has adopted a hardline approach to cartel-related violence and joined US-backed regional efforts targeting drug trafficking organisations.

Following his conversation with de la Espriella, Noboa announced that Ecuador would remove tariffs on Colombian goods starting 1 June. He also stated that both sides had agreed on the extradition of Ecuadorian nationals currently in Colombian territory.

Ecuador had gradually imposed tariffs on Colombian imports since January, citing concerns over Colombia’s handling of security along their shared border.
